Tesco launches new way to buy films and music ‘on demand’
The UK’s biggest retailer has unveiled a new way to buy CDs and DVDs on demand, using electronic kiosks in stores.
In a first for the UK, Discs on Demand gives customers the chance to buy top quality discs that can be printed and collected in store in a matter of minutes.
Customers use a touch screen to browse the extensive library of music, film, TV and software, select the product they wish to purchase and it’s printed onto a disc, ready for their collection, complete with original artwork on both the disc and inlay sleeve.
That means in addition to the latest CD releases on shelf, a massive range of titles not ordinarily stocked in stores from greats such as The Rolling Stones, Abba and Elton John will now be available to Tesco customers. In fact, Discs on Demand is expected to increase the CD, DVD and software range from hundreds to tens of thousands per store.
The new kiosks cater to customers who prefer to buy ‘hard copy’ CDs and DVDs, complementing Tesco’s digital film and music offerings through blinkbox and We7.
Rob Salter, Category Director for Entertainment at Tesco said:
“This simple system means we can offer an incredibly wide range of albums and movies without taking up space in stores. We’re currently trialling the kiosks in two stores and so far customer feedback has been really positive. We’re planning to roll out Discs on Demand to further stores nationwide over the next few months.”
The kiosks will also hold an extensive selection of software products which would not normally be stocked in store, including 37 various Adobe programmes, in comparison to specialist PC stores who offer no more than five lines in store.
Notes to editors:
- The kiosks are being trialled in the Maldon and Dudley stores.
- Prices start from £2.97 for CDs and £5.97 for DVDs.
