About our business

Tesco Czech Republic is one of the four markets in our Central Europe region. We entered the market in 1996, with the acquisition of K-Mart stores and in 2011 acquired the Zabka and Koruna convenience format stores. Koruna stores were converted into Tesco Express, while Zabka stores continue to trade under that name as part of a franchise agreement. Today there are over 180 Tesco stores across the Czech Republic, employing over 11,000 colleagues.

Tesco in India

About our business

Our operations in India are crucial to the smooth running of Tesco across the Group. Our sourcing team ensure that our stores around the world are well-stocked with products from Indian suppliers.

Tesco Bengaluru, the global services arm for Tesco worldwide, provides key business services for Tesco operations globally. Currently the Tesco Bengaluru team is involved in creating and executing strategic initiatives covering IT, Financial, Commercial and Property, among others.

In 2008, we signed a franchise agreement with Trent Ltd, part of the Tata group, to supply Star Bazaar with exclusive access to our retail expertise. We also provide 80% of the stock sold by Star Bazaar, both food and non-food, sourced through our state-of-the-art distribution centre in Mumbai. This distribution centre also provides wholesale products to traditional Indian retailers, kirana stores, restaurants and other businesses, providing small farmers and other suppliers with a more efficient way to sell their wares to the local market.

Tesco in China

About our business

On 29 May 2014 we completed the formation of a joint venture with China Resources Enterprise, Limited to create the leading multi-format retailer in China.

The joint venture combines our best in class retail practices, international sourcing and multi-channel capabilities with CRE’s strong local knowledge and brand, to create a business which is the country's largest food retailer.

Separately, our international sourcing headquarters are based in Hong Kong, and we source more than 50% of all clothing and 40% of other non-food items through the global sourcing office. We currently buy around £2bn worth of goods and services from China for the Tesco Group every year.
