Tesco has invested over £30m in a new training Academy in Asia. Opening today, the Academy is set to be a fantastic resource, training 24,000 staff each year across the region and helping to deliver growth for Tesco in Asia.
Built using the latest technology, the Academy is a first for Korea, a first for Tesco and the first time a global FTSE100 company has invested in a training facility in this region.
Speaking at the launch Philip Clarke, Chief Executive said:
"This is a 21st Century training centre which will become our hub of learning and expertise for the region. It will help us to build on the already strong team we have here and combine deep local knowledge with global experience to develop tomorrow’s leaders. We want the Academy to be known as a centre for training excellence and the facilities here are designed to make this a reality, building on our ambition to become an outstanding international retailer."
The Academy will also support the growth of Tesco’s businesses in South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, China and India which together employ over 100,000 staff and last year reported £11.0bn sales. Bringing together the skill and scale of expertise across the Group it will support the business in its drive to win locally whilst applying skills globally
With 30,000 staff across Tesco already training for their next role today’s launch is a further investment into the company’s well established learning and development programme. At the Academy, staff will be trained, mentored and connected with colleagues across the world. Trainees will benefit from the use of SMART technologies, e-learning and tablet computers to enable them to download training materials, blog about courses and share experiences, wherever they are in the world.
In addition, the Academy is Korea’s biggest and first zero carbon training facility. Designed using the latest green technology it incorporates 7,160 m2 of solar heat collecting panels which will generate 50% of all electricity used at the Academy – the same effect as planting 180 thousand trees per year.
And it won’t all just be about training, the Academy has some great extras - from cycling and karaoke to the Tesco Museum, the facility is a learning experience for both trainees and visitors alike. Capturing the highlights of Tesco’s 80 year history, the museum also reflects the company’s future ambition for excellence across all markets.
