Tesco wins prestigious World Retail Award for “outstanding” virtual store

Tesco’s virtual store in Seoul, South Korea has been named ‘Business Innovation of the Year’ at the prestigious World Retail Awards in London. The award recognised Tesco’s successful launch of the retail industry’s first virtual store, conveniently located in a busy Subway station in Seoul.

The award recognised Tesco’s successful launch of the retail industry’s first virtual store, conveniently located in a busy Subway station in Seoul. The store allows customers to order a range of products on the move using their smartphones and to have their groceries delivered the same day.
The Judges described the virtual store as an “outstanding” innovation and noted that Tesco has continued to develop the concept with the recent trial of its interactive virtual store at Gatwick Airport.
Commenting on the award, Seung-Han Lee, CEO of Tesco Homeplus said, "I am proud that the Homeplus virtual store has won such a prestigious award. It was a great success with our customers and it’s exciting to see the technology now being used across the world.”
Ken Towle, Tesco’s Internet Retailing Director said: “Innovation is a key focus for us because it helps make our customers’ lives easier and more convenient. It’s always exciting to try out new concepts and the virtual store really captured people’s imagination.”
