Tesco Top Employer for Apprentices

The UK’s biggest private sector employer has been awarded the highest accolade in the City & Guilds’ Lion Awards for 2013, as Tesco was named 'Employer of the Year’ at an awards ceremony last night.

The awards, from the UK’s leading vocational education provider, celebrate outstanding achievements in work-based learning.  Tesco was recognised for providing industry-leading programmes that help colleagues to improve their English and Maths skills, broaden their knowledge of different areas of the business and earn while they learn.

Announcing that Tesco had won the category for Best Employer, Chris Jones, CEO and Director General of City & Guilds said:  ‘At City & Guilds, we’re all about helping people get into a job, progress on a job and move onto the next job, something that Tesco’s apprenticeship programme undoubtedly enables. Winning a Lion Award is a sign of exceptional talent and dedication, and Tesco should be very proud of this remarkable accomplishment. Their commitment to developing their employees is inspiring.’

Natasha Adams, UK Operations Personnel Director at Tesco, said: “Apprenticeships are a great way of unlocking potential and giving people the confidence to do a fantastic job for customers.  I’m proud of the programmes we’ve developed, and even more proud of all our colleagues who’ve undertaken apprenticeships, who work so hard and demonstrate huge commitment to the business and to our customers.”

In 2012, Tesco committed to offering 10,000 apprenticeships programmes over two years.  This year, the retailer will be offering 17 apprenticeship programmes across stores and distribution, including the Bakery scheme which helps to deliver over 200 skilled bakers every year, and the new Distribution Driver programme which launches later this year.
