Record UK demand for curry cooking sauces this week suggests more people than ever before are now abandoning the once obligatory post-Christmas turkey sandwich.
This week Tesco has seen its highest ever demand for curry cooking sauces and by the weekend predicts it will have sold 100,000 more than during a normal sales week.
Tesco grocery buyer Josie Holland said: “Serving up the turkey leftovers in sandwiches starts out as a really good idea but by day two most of us are longing for something else.
“Over the last few years there’s been a real trend for turning the Christmas leftovers including sprouts and roast potatoes into a heart-warming curry which is, after all, the UK’s favourite food.
“One of the reasons curried turkey is so popular is that it’s a complete meal that can be rustled up in next to no time as all the ingredients have already been cooked – plus it gives the cook of the house an easy task after all that hard work on Christmas Day.”
Over the last few years demand for curry cooking sauces such as Tikka Masala, Korma and Madras in the week after Christmas has been growing steadily.
During Christmas week last year Tesco saw a 35 per cent increase in sales of curry sauces with madras the most popular variety.
Tesco will be helping customers looking for other ways of cooking their leftovers by offering a free service through which they can tweet @Tesco using the hashtag #RecipeWizard and stating the ingredients they want to use up.
The service, which is already up and running, was first offered last year and was so popular that it has been brought back this Christmas.
The tool will automatically tweet a reply with a text response and an image/link for a recipe on Tesco Realfood. Some users may even be served a list of tips or recipes depending on what ingredients they have.
