We're stopping carrots from going to waste by taking the whole crop from our supplier who's had a bumper yield and offering it to customers at a great price.
A mild winter means our suppliers have more carrots than planned. Growers usually plan for some of their crop to be lost through hard frosts but they have had no such weather this winter. This means they now have a bumper crop of carrots. We’ve worked closely with our suppliers to take as many carrots as possible rather than them ploughing them back into the field.
One particular supplier, had an extra 2,800 tonnes of carrots. We didn’t want to see them wasted so we’ve worked with them to take the lot and offer our customers a fantastic price.
Tesco has several carrot suppliers. What we were able to do was work collaboratively with all our suppliers to balance the amount of carrots they were providing. By working together like this we can manage bumper crops, minimise waste and support all our British farmers better.
You’ll see our bumper crop of Redmere carrots in store from April 5th. A 1kg bag will be 29p down from 45p.
At Tesco, we’re passionate about working in partnership with our suppliers so that no edible food goes to waste. In the last 12 months, we’ve been able to take bumper crops like this and offer customers bonus deals on cauliflowers, strawberries, cherries, lettuce and celery. Customers benefitted from great prices; our farmers were happy we could take more from them, and we prevented good food from going to waste. Everyone wins.
This is another example of Tesco working with our farmers and suppliers to give customers the best products, at the best prices.
This initiative is part of our ongoing work to tackle food waste wherever it occurs – from farm to fork. Tesco believes that no food that could be eaten should be wasted. That’s why we’ve committed that no food that is safe for human consumption will go to waste from Tesco UK Retail operations by the end of 2017.
