Teaming up for the Tesco Food Collection

30 Nov 2018

Hear from FareShare’s Lindsay Boswell and The Trussell Trust’s Emma Revie to find out how Tesco's Food Collection makes a difference to those in need.

Food is at the heart of Christmas celebrations in homes across the country. But as shoppers fill their trollies with Christmas treats we know there are also people in our communities who are in real need at this time of year; people with empty cupboards who would be grateful to receive any food.

That’s why our food charities FareShare and The Trussell Trust have once again teamed up with Tesco for the UK’s biggest food collection for people in need. Until 1 December we are asking shoppers in Tesco stores to put one extra item in the trolley or basket for someone in need this Christmas – whether it is someone receiving emergency help from their local Trussell Trust foodbank or a homeless or elderly person being cooked for by a local group supported by FareShare.

Last year, thanks to the generosity of Tesco shoppers we collected 3.34 million meals. As the people running the two charities involved in the Food Collection we know that every one of those meals made a real difference to someone’s life.

Foodbanks across the country can only help people in need if they have the food on the shelves to do it. They can see people who have not eaten for days before being referred for an emergency food parcel.

Similarly, charities supported by FareShare can make a real difference to people’s lives with the food that is donated; providing hot meals for homeless people or bringing together vulnerable elderly people to share a meal together.

This year the need seems greater than ever, and that is why we are hoping that kind-hearted shoppers will help us collect even more food. Tesco is once again topping up every donation by 20%, which will help us reach even more people in need.

So, if you are in your local Tesco today or tomorrow, please do pick-up a shopping list for the Tesco Food Collection, and donate something to help. Even a small donation of food can help us make a really big difference to the life of someone this Christmas.

Thank you!
