A cot bed which folds out to become a children’s bed and which can then be transformed into a double bed is going on sale for the first time in the UK.

The Geneva, which will be available exclusively at Tesco, is made of smart, white pine and is so versatile that for some people it could even be a bed for life.

The cot bed comes as a flatpack and is slightly wider and longer than a cot. It is easily turned into a children’s bed simply by removing the sides when the child is ready to move out of the cot.

The final stage is for the bed to be transformed into a standard double bed. One cotbed side rail becomes the headboard and the other side rail becomes the footboard. The side slats are changed for longer ones put in to make it a standard double bed size.

The Geneva, which is being supplied to Tesco by Northampton-based Kidsline, costs £498. This excludes the mattress which parents generally buy separately with cot beds.

Tesco nursery furniture buyer Siobhan Marron said: “Many people are looking for ways of saving money.  A cot bed which transforms into a small children’s bed and which can ultimately be extended into a double bed is a fantastic way to increase the longevity of your furniture.  It also makes an excellent piece of furniture for the spare room as it’s ideal for both babies, tots, teenagers or adults staying in the house. Many new builds and starter homes are compact and space is at a premium so space-saving furniture that serves several purposes is very much in demand.”

The Geneva is available in the new Tesco Direct catalogue.
