Forget the spring clean – the autumn clean is now the biggest cleaning event of the year on the household calendar.

During the August bank holiday week sales of laundry and cleaning products soar by 25% at Tesco every year as families clean up the house at the end of the school holidays. By comparison sales rise by 15% in April when most people do their spring cleaning.

The rise includes a 20% increase in stain removers as Mums get ready for the new term. Most Mums wash brand new uniforms before they are worn which also helps account for a boom in sales of  washing powders, capsules and softeners. Sales of cooker and bathroom cleaners also go up as families decide to clean the whole house once they have arrived back from their summer holidays.

To help householders with their annual cleaning chores Tesco is offering Buy One Get One Free Offers on 135 cleaning and laundry products until September 6th.

The household cleaning market is now worth 1.6 billion in the UK, according to Mintel.

Tesco household products manager Simon Marsden said: “The autumn clean is Christmas for us – it’s the biggest sales peak of the year.  Householders want to start afresh at the end of the holidays after the children have been around the house all summer.  Our research shows people come back from summer holidays  with batteries recharged eager to clean up their home ready for the new season. This is our biggest cleaning offer ever to help householders  when they are trying to spend carefully.”
