Sporting giant Sir Alex Ferguson was expected to draw thousands of fans to a Tesco store in Manchester today (Thursday Oct 24) for an exclusive signing of his new autobiography.

The first fan, Sharon Warwick, 41, from Colwyn Bay, Wales, began camping outside Tesco’s Stretford Extra store at midnight on Tuesday.

More than 100 fans queued overnight in the store’s atrium overnight and by 8am there were approximately 1000 people in line snaking their way round the store.

The first 1000 were then given wristbands by security to ensure they could hold their place in the crowd.

Tesco book buyer Hazel Powell said: “The turn out for this historic event has been fantastic and is the biggest crowd we’ve ever had for a book signing.

“We are honoured that Sir Alex Ferguson will be doing his only book-signing at the Stretford store.  We know fans will be counting down the days to this historic occasion.

“There has been a lot of excitement about the book which we forecast will not only be the top selling autobiography of the year but also in the top five books released in 2013.

“The book is already being talked about not only by Manchester United supporters but football fans across the world.”

One of the first in the queue to get the book signed by Sir Alex was Nicola Fay, 38, from Wythenshawe, Manchester.

She got to the store at 7.30pm last night (Wednesday Oct 23) and despite being ‘extremely excited’ even managed to get a few hours sleep.

Nicola, who’s been a Man Utd fan all her life said: “I’m so pleased as the book is for a friend of mine who lives in Thailand and is a big Man Utd fan too. I’m queuing for him.

“I got here at 7.30pm and the place was already buzzing. I bought a quilt from Tesco and even managed to get a few hours sleep.

“Sir Alex is my hero but when I meet him I’m going to ask who his hero is.”

During Sir Alex’s 26-year reign at Manchester United he became the most successful manager in the history of British football winning 13 league titles, two Champions League crowns, five FA Cups and four league cups.

Over the last quarter of a century there have been seismic changes at Manchester United and in that time Sir Alex has seen the club become a major global business.

Over the last four years Sir Alex has been reflecting and jotting down details of his extraordinary career and in the book he reflects on that story as it unfolded, from his very early days in the tough shipyard areas of Govan in Glasgow.

The book, called Alex Ferguson : My Autobiography, will be sold by Tesco for £12.
