Our Community Champions support by delivering our core community programmes, which ranges from donating surplus food to those in need through our Community Food Connection to supporting local projects with our Bags of Help community grant scheme, however it is the work of our colleagues and the champions in particular, that really bring these schemes to life.
Here are just some of the stories from our Community Champions;
Richard Stephenson- Evans, Kidsgrove;
I have been the Community Champion at Kidsgrove since 2004. I love that every day is different and incredibly rewarding, knowing that something we do can mean so much to someone in need . I have many proud moments, recently I was recognised by my local MP around the work we have done during COVID-19 in getting vital food parcels and meals to the vulnerable, via Community Food Connection.
Debbie Layfield, Bidston Moss;
I have been in the role since 2014 and the most rewarding part is being able to support a wide range of community groups/charities and really being able to make a positive contribution to the community. The proudest moment was the day that I got a phone call informing me that I was one of the finalists for Merseyside Woman of the Year. It wasn’t the winning, it was knowing that my community voted for me and appreciated what I do.
Theresa Fisher, Quedgeley Extra;
I have been doing this role for just over four years. I absolutely love my job, working with some fantastic people and supporting local charities. My most proudest moment was being nominated for the Pride of Britain award last year and making it to the final round. We run a knit and natter group at our store which is made up of 40 members from the community and some of our colleagues. The group have raised lots of money for our National Charity Partnership (Diabetes UK, British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK) and local charities. Along with raising money, the group also knit baby hats, cardigans and twiddle blankets for our local hospital and hats, gloves and scarfs for the homeless.
