On the banks of the River Tyne, a quiet revolution has been taking place over the last decade or so. On the North side, the gentrification of the warehouses started the process, soon followed by a raft of trendy bars and the Malmaison hotel. With the Millennium came the ‘winking eye’ bridge leading south to the achingly cool Baltic centre, closely followed by the Sage, a music and cultural venue that locals say bears more than a passing resemblance to the Sydney Opera House.
