I’ve just got back from a busy couple of weeks at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and the National Retail Federation’s Big Show (commonly known as NRF) in the U.S. CES is the biggest technology show in the world with over 150,000 people attending and NRF is the biggest retail tech show in the world with a crowd of around 40,000.

As you’ll remember from my last post I was due to jet off to Silicon Valley in California, in search of the latest innovations and best innovators. On my trip I was joined by some of our IT leadership team, who - like me -were keen to visit this huge and thriving area...

Behind the scenes at Tesco HQ teams of technology experts work away. Day in and day out they seek out and create the latest and very best technology. They play with it, adapt it and find out how it can make life better for customers and colleagues. No idea is too big, no thought unthinkable and no ambition too grand – well, almost.

Recently I took part in the second Tesco Hackathon and was joined by teams from around the business including dunnhumby, blinkbox, Mobcast and we7. For those of you who are new to the concept, a hackathon is a 24 hour competition in which teams can collaborate and innovate together outside of their normal work commitments.

If you’d told me while I was at University that I was going to end up working for a supermarket and loving it as much as I do, I wouldn’t have believed you. It's not an obvious route from studying nanotechnology then a PhD in electronics, but I've been described as having “the best job in the company” and I'd have to agree.
