Behind every little thing we do to improve our customers’ Tesco experience there’s a team of IT experts working away. I’m not just talking about new shopping apps, or the launch of Tesco’s hudl tablet. I’m talking about how we make sure we’ve got the right stock on our shelves, the same prices on our labels as at the till, and the facility to ‘Scan as you Shop’ so you don’t have to queue.
There is an old Thai saying: Nai Nam Mee Pla Nai Na Mee Khao – There are fish in the waters, there is rice in the fields. Thailand has always been a land of plenty. Fertile soils and a tropical climate means that it can grow amazing produce, and livestock thrives here. It’s the world’s sixth largest rice exporter, the third largest fisheries exporter and the second largest sugar exporter. Not bad for the world’s 51st largest country by land mass.
I’ve just got back from a busy couple of weeks at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and the National Retail Federation’s Big Show (commonly known as NRF) in the U.S. CES is the biggest technology show in the world with over 150,000 people attending and NRF is the biggest retail tech show in the world with a crowd of around 40,000.
Many readers will need no introduction to the NRF Big Show, the annual gathering of the retail technology world which takes place in New York every January. Having attended for a decade, I consider myself something of an NRF veteran – as Tesco Chief Information Officer, it’s an invaluable way to meet all my suppliers in the space of two days, and this year’s show felt to me like the biggest and busiest yet.
