First ever reduced fat and salt cheese to be launched in UK

Growing demand for healthier cheeses has led to the creation of the UK’s first ever reduced fat and salt cheese. The ground-breaking cheese which will go on sale exclusively at Tesco stores this week contains 30 per cent less fat and 30 per cent less salt than standard Cheddar.

In the last 10 years increasing consumer interest in healthier foods has turned healthier hard cheese into one of the fastest growing areas of the UK cheese market. According to retail analysts Nielsen it is worth £70 million and growing at 11 per cent year on year.

Tesco cheese category buyer manager David Chamberlain said: “It’s important we give shoppers healthier alternatives to their favourite cheeses and while we have plenty of choice on our shelves there has never been one that offers both reduced fat and salt.

“While cheese, and especially Cheddar, is a staple food in shopping baskets it is also one of the biggest contributors of salt to the UK diet along with bacon and bread. 

 “With more people than ever watching their salt as well as their fat intake we believe this new cheese will help give them more choice.

“Reducing the salt content in food is one of the key elements of our product improvement programme and since 2006 we have removed over 3000 tonnes of salt from our food range.”

The cheese has been made for Tesco by award-winning dairy producers Joseph Heler of Nantwich, Cheshire, who have become well known for their work within the reduced fat cheese market.

Earlier this year Heler’s created the first ever commercially made reduced salt Cheddar for Tesco. The success of that cheese prompted the creation of the Reduced Fat and Salt cheese.

The new cheese will be available in a medium strength variety to tempt cheese lovers who enjoy a stronger flavour.

Tesco nutritionist Karen Tonks said: “Many lower-fat dairy products contain at least the same level of micronutrients as full fat versions. It is therefore possible for people to get the nutritional benefit that dairy products provide by switching to lower fat alternatives.

“Over the last decade salt consumption has been declining steadily and although cheese provides only four per cent of the salt in the UK diet choosing a great tasting reduced salt product can help continue the decline.”

Tesco’s Reduced Fat Reduced Salt Medium Cheese cost £2 per 250g pack (£8 per kilo).
