Optional till receipts in Express stores

Speeding up the shopping trip and reducing paper use
Our customers tell us that they don't always need nor want a receipt. With this in mind we have been trialling optional receipts at 40 of our Express stores. This means that instead of automatically printing a receipt, we ask customers at our manned checkouts if they would like one and only print the receipts that customers want.
Throughout the trial we reduced paper usage by over 50% and because of this success we are now rolling this out across the UK. In addition to the trial we set up a Facebook survey asking customers if they would like the option to have a receipt printed. We received 3500 comments and 2400 likes. We found that many customers who buy a few items don't want a receipt.
This small change to the shopping trip will speed up time at the till and at the same time save paper and reduce waste - helping us to reduce our impact on the environment.
