Tesco helps support local communities over the period of Ramadan

Ramadan is one of the most significant events in the Islamic calendar, during which Muslims worldwide observe a month of fasting. To help mark this important event, we have been running a selection of community initiatives in our stores across the countries we operate in.

For those who are fasting, meals are served before sunrise and after sunset, and eaten with family or with the local community. To make it easy for customers in Turkey, three different Ramadan packs – which included tea, rice, lentils and other key ingredients of traditional Turkish cuisine – were put on offer at 190 Tesco Kipa stores in 24 Turkish cities. In cooperation with the Turkish Red Crescent, Tesco Kipa made it easy for customers to help the needy, either by donating cash or Ramadan food packs in stores or by making online donations.

In Malaysia, we launched a brand new initiative, Bubur Lambuk on Wheels. Bubur Lambuk (Eid Porridge), is a popular porridge consumed during Ramadan. We became the first supermarket ever in Malaysia to give out free portions of this tasty meal to customers, colleagues, as well the poor and underprivileged in local communities. In total, over 70,000 bowels of Bubur Lambuk were distributed over the month long period of fasting.

We have been working hard to support local communities, and specifically those in need. Over the fasting period, we gave away clothing and goodies to over 750 orphans and underprivileged children from 15 care homes across Malaysia. Through in store collections, we also donated over £2,500 worth of groceries to four orphanages and a number of poor families.
