Richard Frear named Store Manager of the Year at the Grocer Gold Awards 2013

Richard joined Tesco at 17 as a part time frozen food assistant in our Brislington Extra. After success in his A-levels, instead of following his friends to university, he decided to take a full time position at our Bristol Metro.

He honed his management skills as a night manager and has never looked back. In 2010 he was promoted to Store Manager. Two store manager appointments at Tesco Metros in Langport and Cardiff followed before he joined the Tesco Extra in Cardiff in 2011. It was there that the Grocer mystery shopper visited the store finding that it shone on customer service. Richard was put forward for the Grocer Gold Store Manager of the Year Award which he went on to win. This is what the judges had to say about Richard's presentation:

The Store Managers we saw this year were incredibly impressive: passionate about their store, about their people, and about retail. However, after lengthy debate, a clear winner emerged. Richard's presentation showed how his strategic, empowering and fun approach to managing a store delivered stunning results. For instance, when he arrived in Cardiff, only 22% of shoppers rated the store as excellent. Within a year he had transformed that figure to 86%. He also shone during the 10 minute Q&A after his presentation, with his honesty and mastery of detail.
