Collecting food for communities across Europe
2 Dec 2014
We have once again been holding food collections at many of our stores across Europe.
With several million people at risk of food poverty in Europe, donations from charity remain a crucial way for many to have enough to eat each day.
So at Tesco we are proud that we have once again been holding food collections at many of our stores across Europe. In addition to our Neighbourhood Food Collections in the UK, which took place all of last week, we recently held collections in some of our other European markets.
In the Czech Republic, for example, collections took place on Saturday 22 November in 55 of our stores across the country. 270 Tesco colleagues volunteered to support the collections, during which customers helped to raise over 70 tonnes of food for charity, far more than last year. Including our 20% top-up, this equates to over 170,000 meals.
Collections have also taken place in 67 stores in Slovakia and stores across Poland, where customers have helped to raise 137,000 and 200,000 meals respectively, including our 20% top-up.
Since the start of our food collections four years ago, we have raised over 15 million meals for charity in the UK alone. With their roll-out now well under way across Europe we can expect to raise many more meals over the coming years.
Many thanks to all our generous customers who have donated food and to our colleagues and members of the public who have volunteered to assist the collections in our stores.
