74 Hampers and Counting

21 Dec 2015

All year round our Community Champions work with local charities and community groups to bring genuine benefit to the local community but over the festive period there are many stories of our colleagues and local communities going the extra mile.

One example highlighted to us this year has been the great work of local groups at Kidsgrove, Stoke on Trent, who have worked with our local Community Champion to create and deliver Christmas food hampers to local residents who were alone or in need of support. Building on the success of last year where 25 hampers were donated, this year with the additional support of local groups - Aspire Housing, Kidsgrove Care Solutions, Staffordshire Clubs for Young People and the local Rotary Club - a total of 74 hampers have so far been delivered. Our Community Champion at Kidsgrove store also worked with the police to identify local elderly people who were alone or had been victims of burglary so that hampers could be delivered to them.

The Kidsgrove Community Champion said “I heard many sad stories as I handed out Christmas hampers and poinsettia plants but people really loved the support that Tesco have been giving for local people.”

In addition to distributing Christmas hampers, the store has also organised a number of Christmas Parties for local community groups. The largest party was for the women's Royal Voluntary Services group. A full three course meal with all the trimmings plus disco afterwards was organised for the group.
