Central European Food Collections Raise over 1.4 Million Meals for Charity
18 Dec 2015
As we approach Christmas, colleagues across Tesco use the opportunity to support those in need. One of the main ways we do this is by organising Neighbourhood Food Collections for those who find themselves suffering from food poverty.
This year 547 stores across Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia participated in the Neighbourhood Food Collection and collected over 550 tonnes of food, the equivalent of 1.4 million meals. This total includes a 20% top up from Tesco which helps our charity partners distribute the food to their networks. Compared to the 823,000 meals donated last year, this is a significant increase and we are really proud of all the work our colleagues and charity parters have put into making these collections a success.
In the Czech Republic we partnered with Potravinová banka (Czech Food Banks) and on the 21st November over 90 stores participated in the food collection. 308,000 meals were donated compared to 170,000 last year.
Hungary this year held two food collections; one in November and one in December. Over 260 stores got involved across the two events and 600,000 meals were donated to Magyar Élelmiszerbank Egyesület (Hungarian Food Banks) and Magyar Vöröskereszt (Red Cross).
Meanwhile in Poland, between the 4th - 6th December 220 stores collected 250,000 meals for Banki Żywności (Polish Food Banks).
Finally, stores in Slovakia collected 230,000 meals over a 6 days period. All the food collected here will be given to Caritas Slovakia, Evanjelická diakonia, Depau and Potravinová banka slovenska (Slovak Food Banks).
When added to the UK Neighbourhood Food Collection total of 3.7 million meals, Tesco colleagues, customers and charity partners have enabled over 5.1 million meals help those in need this festive period. For more information about our UK collection click here.
