Level Trust remove the barriers that poverty brings to a child's education in Luton by working in partnership with schools & families to ensure that every child has what they need to do their best in school.

After learning that 25% of the children in Luton live under the poverty line and therefore do not have the basic learning equipment to start school, Karen and her team wanted to support the charity’s Learn at Home project which provides a school bag filled with stationary, reading books, crafts & equipment for children across Luton.

Two large fundraising events were held to raise money for the cause. The first saw a school themed stationary donation-station being set up in store whereby customers could purchase items and donate them to Level Trust. There was also face-painting, balloon modelling, a tuck shop and school dress-up, for staff to get involved too.

The second was a community Carnival held in May in the Luton Tesco carpark, with traditional stalls, including ones from community groups and other charities.

In total, over two thousand pounds was raised, and with the 20% Tesco Charity top-up and over six thousand pounds worth of donated stationary, the project raised a grand total of over nine thousand pounds.

This was enough to provide 1765 children with bags full of learning equipment on their first day at school across 19 schools in Luton. These bags were packed and delivered with support from 2 local businesses, Vauxhall and Barclay's.

Karen said, “This was a real community event collaborating with other businesses, organisations & charities, with Tesco the main sponsor, therefore building trusted relationships with the community. It also wouldn't have been possible without the amazing support & encouragement from my store manager Mr John Cruickshank.”
