Back to School: India
8 Jun 2016
June in India is the time of year when children go back to school. At Tesco Bengaluru, the operations and technology centre for Tesco worldwide, teams have been supporting local schools by providing better infrastructure, learning materials and organising extra-curricular events to make sure that schools are great environments to learn and build skills in.
This is important to Tesco because we know that our business can only be vibrant if the communities in which we operate are vibrant too. Tesco Bengaluru has had a continuing association with Gandhipuram village which is located just a few kilometres away from the office campus.
To commemorate World Environment Day on 5th June, the team organised a ‘Back To School’ volunteering event at a government school, the latest addition to Tesco Bengaluru’s CSR School Adoption Model.
Volunteers gifted all the students study hampers – books, crayons, geometry boxes, pens and pencils – to encourage them in their learning. They then engaged the children in activities themed around World Environment Day, encouraging them to reuse plastic and use waster creatively. The children took part in an art competition on environment-related topics, made paper bags and created fun toys and pen stands with used plastic bottles.
Previously, volunteers have engaged the wider village residents in cleanliness and afforestation drives and have also installed solar lights in the village for sustainable light in public spaces.
