Nearly one year ago, on the 25th April 2015, a huge earthquake hit Nepal devastating the lives of many people. Our colleagues responded to the disaster by raising money for the Red Cross and together with our customers donated over £50,000 to support the relief effort.

Red Cross volunteers were among the first on the scene pulling people from the rubble and administering first aid. In the coming weeks and months Red Cross supported people with 110,000 tents or tarpaulins, 38,000 hygiene kits and 5.4 million litres of water. The money raised by Tesco is equivalent to providing 217 families with tents or 14,200 people with blankets.

One year on the Red Cross are helping families and communities recover their livelihoods, property and prepare for future disasters. Cash grants have helped farmers to replace tools, training in carpentry is supporting the reconstruction of homes and neighbourhood committees have been formed to plan for future disaster responses.

The Red Cross response effort was in part possible because of the preparedness projects Red Cross has already implemented in the region. In 2014, Tesco became founding member of the Disaster Relief Alliance which continues to support vital preparedness projects like these around the world.

Our partnership with the Red Cross has been recognised by Business in the Community (BITC). Having been shortlisted for the International Disaster Relief Award in 2015, this year we are pleased to have been reaccredited by BITC for demonstrating that we remain committed to supporting the Red Cross with disaster relief.

The recognition from BITC is only possible because of the contribution of our colleagues and customers and we would like to thank those who have showed support for the Red Cross and the people we are helping to recover from past and future disasters.
