Collaboration and growth, UK
Helping our suppliers to grow and develop is an important part of how we trade responsibly. One example is Village Bakery in Wales, which has been supplying Tesco since 2008.
Village Bakery is an award-winning third generation family bakery which was established in Wales in 1934. Village Bakery started working with Tesco in 2008 by supplying bread and morning goods into 11 stores in North Wales.
After the local success of their bakery products they also began to supply Tesco with hot pie cabinet pies and pasties. Last year they undertook work to get to our own label standards, resulting in the launch of Tesco Finest Welsh Cakes and Tesco Finest Mini Welsh Cakes to stores across Wales. These outstanding products are made to an authentic recipe using Welsh butter and Vostizza currants.
Last year Village Bakery won the Grocer Gold Award – Own Label Bakery Winners for their Finest Welsh Cakes in recognition of the development of the own label range. The product has now been launched at Tesco stores across the UK. This year, Village Bakery was awarded the Local Supplier of the Year Award at the Tesco IGD Conference.
On the back of the local success, Village Bakery has recently secured another national listing for a toasting product that will launch in October this year. By the end of this financial year, Village Bakery turnover with Tesco at retail value is likely to have tripled from what it was two years ago and the year-on-year growth with Tesco is in double digits. Tesco is now a key customer to Village Bakery.
“As a family business we have invested a lot of time and effort understanding the needs of Tesco. With the support of their local sourcing team we have made the transition from a successful local supplier to a national Tesco own label supplier. We now have a solid foundation to develop our business with Tesco and it is a partnership we value.”
