Donating fridges and freezers to reduce food waste
16 November 2018
At Tesco we have no time for waste. We know that our customers and colleagues care strongly about waste and five years ago we made a commitment to lead on reducing food waste globally. We are working towards minimising food surplus in our distribution centres and in our stores; for example by reducing-to-clear food close to its expiry date. However, if food cannot be sold, we offer it to charities and community groups who help feed people in need.
Many organisations tell us that having enough fridge and freezer storage space is an issue that limits the amount of donated food they can take.To help, we've launched the Community Chill in the Republic of Ireland. Through this community support initiative we are donating free fridges and freezers to local groups who collect surplus food and redistribute it to those in need, allowing them to maximise their capacity and continue to build the fantastic services they provide in our communities. To date we have donated 150 fridges and freezers, and 20 refrigerated vans.
