Tesco Malaysia introduces reusable bags

As a food business, our long-term success depends on the health of the natural environment. Large amounts of packaging and plastic are ending up in natural environments and harming the habitats and ecosystems we all rely on.

To encouraging customers to bring back and reuse their carrier bags, Tesco Malaysia have launched ‘The Unforgettable Bag’. This is a new bag design and is the centerpiece of a campaign to help reduce single use plastic bags. Every Malaysian on average throws away 300 plastic bags a year, some of which end up in our oceans harming sea life.

There are three unique designs of endangered sea creatures on the new reusable bags. Each design contains a barcode, which when scanned will give the customers a 20 sen rebate on their total purchase to further encourage customers to reuse bags when they shop at Tesco. Tesco is the first hypermarket in Malaysia to provide rebates for shoppers reusing their shopping bags and is valid until 31 December 2018.

Paul Ritchie, CEO Tesco Malaysia said at the Unforgettable bags launch;

“We have halved the number of single-use plastic bags given out in our stores between 2011 and 2017, but the rate of reduction is not fast enough. We hope that we’re able to accelerate the reduction of plastic bag use in our operations. Our aim is to further halve the number of plastic bags this year through the Unforgettable Bag campaign,”

To date over one million unforgettable bags have been sold and customers on average have reused their bags up to 4 times since the beginning of the campaign.
