Our work with the Rainforest Alliance
4 October 2019
We want to give our customers peace of mind that the products they buy from us, no matter the range, are sourced with respect for the environment and people.
Tesco and the Rainforest Alliance have been working together for many years. We share commitments to support farming communities globally, increase farmer and workers incomes, and preserve wildlife.
The Rainforest Alliance Sustainable Agriculture Standard is used to certify farms and producer groups. These comprehensive standards and traceability systems mean that products or ingredients sourced bearing the green frog seal can be traced back to well-managed farms that protect workers, wildlife, and communities.
Tesco is proud to source a number of Rainforest Alliance Certified™ products including bananas, tea and coffee. All of the cocoa for all Own Brand chocolate confectionery sold in the UK is also sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms (through the mass balance model). We know that by working with the Rainforest Alliance our purchases help support better living conditions for cocoa farmers and make a difference to the environment.
We use independent certifications like the Rainforest Alliance to help ensure decent working conditions and improve standards for people working in our supply chains. However, we also recognise that in many cases we cannot address labour rights abuses without first addressing the root causes which underlie them.We work with a large number of stakeholders including suppliers, other retailers, trade unions, NGOs, governments and other industry experts to share learnings and work together to overcome these challenges. Our work focuses on the four new themes for our strategy; forced labour, sustainable livelihoods, gender and worker representation. Find out more information here.
