It’s been a children’s favourite for over 50 years but now cheesy beans have inspired the world’s first beany cheese.

Made with cheddar and real baked beans in tomato sauce by Tesco, the unique cheese will go on sale at more than 300 of the supermarkets stores across the UK from tomorrow.

Aimed at the kids’ food market the cheese will be sold in a six disc pack along with another new unique type, pizza flavour, which is made with semi dried tomatoes and oregano.

Said Tesco cheese buyer Ashleigh MacFarlane: “Cheesy beans have been a classic kids’ treat for over half a century yet no one has ever thought of combining them.

“We wanted a snacking cheese that would appeal to youngsters and hope it will attract the attention of parents as cheese is a good way of making sure children get calcium. They are also a handy size to fit in lunch boxes.

“But we also think there will be plenty of adults who will hanker after it especially those who fondly remember their student days.”

Both new cheeses are made with mild cheddar, not processed cheese. Each one provides at least 15 per cent of a child’s RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) for calcium and both meet the FSA Salt Targets for 2012.

The small portions help control intake and the flavours help mums get their kids to eat cheese.

The cheeses are part of Tesco’s new Goodness range for children from the age of five up which is made up of healthy snacks, chilled prepared meals and lunchbox fillers.

There are over 70 products in the range - from pasta sauces and chilled prepared meals, to fun-sized fruit packs and flavoured milks.

All products in the range will meet strict criteria for levels of fat, saturates, sugar and salt.

Each product also has to meet the approval of the children’s tasting panel before it makes the final range.
